Click flooring vs tongue and groove

Understand the joint system before choosing a floor and agreeing the fitting method.

    The joint connects the boards

Click and tongue-and-groove describe how neighbouring boards fit together. A click system uses a locking profile. A conventional tongue-and-groove board has a projecting tongue that fits into the next board’s groove. The joint type is separate from whether the finished floor is floated or bonded to the subfloor.

    Check the exact fitting instructions

Many click systems connect without glue in the joints, but assembly methods differ. Conventional tongue-and-groove floors may need joint adhesive when floated, depending on the product. Your installer should use the instructions for the actual boards rather than a generic method remembered from another floor.

Plan for doorways and awkward areas

Ask your installer how they will work around door frames, pipes and the final row. The joint profile can influence the sequence of fitting. Confirm any required tools and whether the floor can be installed using your proposed method. Joint design alone does not establish compatibility with underfloor heating.

    Compare the whole product

Choose by appearance, grade, finish, dimensions and installation requirements as well as the locking system. Ask for a fitting quotation based on the exact product code. Before ordering accessories, confirm which underlay, adhesive and trims are needed. This avoids buying materials for a different joint system or installation method.
